Hello all, here's a little guide I've done for the begginers to pointe!
First of all, those beginning pointe should not attempt pointe work at home. You may sprain/break your ankles from trying to go en pointe and not knowing the correct way to. It's extremely dangerous, so please please be very careful! You also don't want to develop wrong techniques of pointe, which may mould your shoes into a wrong shape. Please don't try to teach yourself pointe!

Buying Pointe ShoesThe two main brands of pointe shoes you can find in Singapore are:
1) Bloch (can be bought from Sonata Dancewear, OKH, Stage Image)- Bloch Serenade(the most common, recommended shoe for beginners. Broad platform allows for better balancing)
http://www.bloch.com.au/shop/p-152-serenade.aspx-Bloch Suprima (there is also Suprima strong, which is suitable for people with high, strong arches)
http://www.bloch.com.au/shop/p-154-suprima.aspx-Bloch Sonata(the 3/4 shank of this shoe is however, not recommended for beginners en pointe because beginners are not yet strong enough to hold their arch in the shoe)
http://www.bloch.com.au/shop/p-15-sonata.aspx=> There are many other models of Bloch pointe shoes, but are not available in Singapore. ) => It's cheapest to get Bloch pointe shoes from Sonata($42-45).(Ribbons cost about $5)2) Sansha (can only be bought from Costumes Connection)- Sansha Ovation (3/4 shank)http://www.sansha.com/ShowModel.php?id=6-Sansha Recitalhttp://web.singnet.com.sg/~costumes/Footwear%20Ballet.htm (called 'Sansha full pointe')
=> You can check the prices of the shoes from the second link above. Some useful videos:Fitting Pointe Shoeshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35gPlaYOnm4It's really important to get shoes that fit you because of both your safety and comfort.
There are different widths and sizes of pointe shoes, make sure you get the one that fits your feet the most. Pointe shoes will feel snug, but not painfully tight. You should be able to keep your toes long in the shoes.
How to sew on ribbons onto your pointe shoeshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feCNkoAUbe4&feature=relatedI recommend using dental floss to sew on the ribbons, so that the ribbons will not come off easily.
If you find that the heel of your pointe shoes keeps falling off when you do pointe, try sewing elastics to the heel of the shoe.
Breaking in pointe shoeshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pX-PNqJr9z4&feature=relatedThis is really important in making your shoes more comfortable to dance in. If you're afraid you don't know how to do it, you can approach me or anyone who has experience in pointe. Please be careful in breaking, you don't want to break the entire shank of the shoe and end up having to buy another pair.
How to tie the ribbons on pointe shoeshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_BqoNLLlLYBe sure not to tie the knot at the back of your ankle because you don't want to develop tendonities. Don't tie them too tightly as well, if not it will be really uncomfortable.
You can check out the other videos of this user: Lisa Howell. She's a dance physiotherapist and her videos are really useful.
I hope this has helped you in understanding pointe work and pointe shoes better.(: It's exciting to go en pointe, but I cannot emphasise more how dangerous it is for beginners to dance en pointe without a teacher's supervision!
Pointework can be really beautiful but that comes only with a lot, a lot of hard work. (:
Feel free to approach me if you have any questions about pointe shoes, I'll try to help you. You can always approach those who have experience en pointe too, or search the net for more information.
